How to find true rest
v28-30. “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”
Yet again there is so much in this passage. I nearly chose v19 ‘But wisdom is proved right by her deeds’, not least because of the link with the passages in James that we recently studied on Sunday evenings but these verses are just such an immense comfort, a call from a loving Saviour for us to know real rest and peace. He has made the burden easy because He has taken the burden of our sin and failure. He is our pattern – we must learn from Him how we should treat people. The WWJD (what would Jesus do) wrist bands were very popular in the US. This is a more gentle reminder of from whom we need to learn!
For many of us we like to be ‘in control’. We act sometimes as though we want to keep on shouldering our burdens because it would be a sign of weakness not to,but that needs to belong to the ‘old’ us, we are a new creation and must put our trust, our weariness, our problems in the hands of our Saviour. I remember a pastor in Cambridge telling the story of how we took our burdens to the foot of the cross and laid them there, but too often picked them up as we went away again!
Father God, help me to listen to you and learn from you every day of my life. Help me to learn how to give up my burdens to you and to trust and follow your plans, not mine. Help me to share with others the joy of resting in you. Through the power of your Holy Spirit help me to relate to others as you would. Amen.
