Hope beyond grief
(v4) Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.
Every news story seems to bring fresh suffering; sometimes it seems the whole world is mourning.
Jesus speaks with absolute authority when he promises his comfort. One day, we shall see him face to face and all sorrow and sadness will flee away. As human beings, we will grieve – there’s nothing wrong with that; but let us also fix our eyes on eternity in the knowledge that God will bring all things to a wonderful sense of completion in his good time.
Loving Lord, help me to grieve naturally and freely in a way that recognises my humanity. But Lord, in that grief, visit me with your eternal hope, so that I will catch a glimpse of your glorious comfort. Amen.
