(v10-11) Jesus said to him, ‘Away from me, Satan! For it is written: “Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.”’ Then the devil left him, and angels came and attended him.
In forty days of temptation Jesus experienced all that Satan could throw at him to try to make him sin. However we learn some important things about temptation from the experience of Jesus:
- Temptation is not forever. When we resist, the evil one begins to seek more vulnerable prey.
- For every temptation, there is a verse of scripture, and just quoting the verse gives us spiritual power to resist.
- Knowing that Jesus (who was free from sin) was also tempted should help us to appreciate that temptation itself is not a sin; everything hangs on our response.
Let us ask God to help us deal with temptation as he did, so that God will be glorified by our obedience.
Loving Lord, help me respond to temptation as Jesus did, and help me resist the evil one, so that I may be truly free to serve you. Amen.
