v.10 Why do we profane the covenant of our fathers by breaking faith with one another?
Intermarriage with other peoples was strictly forbidden for the Jews because it would be one more temptation to disobey God’s laws. Divorce also was to be avoided. The consequences of these things and others where deep relationships are forged and then broken, can be profound.
When we break faith with someone, fail them or let them down, this can have a deep impact on the relationship and also on the emotions and mental state of those involved. We must do all that is in our power to avoid damaging friendships and family relationships, not only for the love of those directly involved, but also because of those who can suffer “collateral damage”.
Help me, Lord, to love others as you love us. I know that I shall often fail, but I pray that I may have more of your love in my heart so that I don’t become indifferent to such failures. Amen
