United we stand, divided we fall
v.12 …..The body is a unit, though it is made up of many parts; and although all its parts are many, they form one body. So it is with Christ.
Corinth was a bustling cosmopolitan city, with many pagan religions and immoral diversions in sway. This young church no doubt reflected the city’s diversity, and Paul readily recognises that its members bring with them a variety of skills, backgrounds and resources. Even so, he instructs that despite these differences, they are through the Holy Spirit, one whole.
We only need to look around us to see what a variety of talent, skill, wisdom and personality we have within our own church community. Yet we are only enriched – and can only progress in mission – if we act as a coordinated unit, greater than the sum of its parts.
Father, I thank you for the abilities with which I am blessed, and I praise you too that I am surrounded by fellow worshippers who have other gifts. Help us all to work together so that as a whole and healthy body we are able to glorify Your Name by the quality and integrity of our teaching, and by the extent and effectiveness of our outreach. Make us all beacons for You. Amen.
