You were bought at a price
v23 “You were bought at a price; do not become slaves of men.”
In this chapter we read of all kinds of customs and social norms that may confuse us, worry us and rob us of our freedom or our peace. In a very rational and calm way Paul discusses these situations and urges us against giving in to irrational prejudices.
The moral standards that we must follow are those which Jesus laid down and which do not necessarily coincide with the norms of our society. Our ultimate allegiance is to Jesus. As Paul writes in 1 Corinthians 6:19b – 20a: “You are not your own; you were bought at a price”. We cannot be completely free agents because we have been bought at the cost of Jesus’ blood and thus do not belong to ourselves.
Help me, Lord, to understand that I am not my own to do and to live as I want. Please give me your wisdom to discern your will and the courage to do it. Amen.
