The past is a foreign country
v11 “And that is what some of you were.”
Paul gives a catalogue of vices in vv. 9-10, and one can imagine that those listening to this letter being read out were inwardly proud that they were not like them. How easily we forget our own past and its failings, or indeed the present failings that we ignore! But then Paul hits them with: “And that is what some of you were”.
As we saw in yesterday’s reading, it is so easy to disassociate ourselves from “the wrong sort of people” and forget that once upon a time we were like them. Who knows what we might have done or what we might have become, had it not been for the grace of God?
Lord, please help me to be thankful for what you have done in my life, and never forget what I was or could have become. Amen.
