In the world but not of it
v9-10 “I have written to you in my letter not to associate with sexually immoral people – not at all meaning the people of this world…. In that case you would have to leave this world.”
Paul is being very clear that moral discipline is something that the church, i.e. the Christians gathered in a particular place, should exercise within their fellowship. This does not mean however, that they must disassociate themselves from everyone who is behaving in an immoral way.
If we are to be salt and light in the world, we must be prepared to mix with, and become friends of, those whose lives fall short of God’s standards. Firstly we know that our own lives also often fall short, and secondly how can we have an influence for good on society if we cut ourselves off from it and retreat into a Christian sub-culture?
Lord Jesus, help me to see those whom I might want to condemn as those for whom Jesus also died. If necessary, take me out of my comfort zone to fulfil your Commission (Matthew 28:18-20). Amen
