Come dine with me
v.2 “Do not forget to show hospitality to strangers, for by so doing some people have shown hospitality to angels without knowing it.”
In Matthew 25, Jesus tells the parable of the sheep and the goats. Why not turn to the passage now? The King in verse 35 says: “For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in”. In verse 40 we are reminded: “The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’” This verse in Hebrews is a reminder to us that when we show hospitality to strangers, we are showing hospitality to Jesus himself.
This is a wonderfully practical verse! Perhaps today you could show hospitality to a colleague, a friend at school or university, or a complete stranger (!) by offering to buy them a coffee, a cake, or even their lunch? Not only would this be a great practical witness of your faith, but also you’d be doing it for Jesus.
Lord Jesus, you have taught me a radical way of loving people and showing kindness. Thank you for this verse which demonstrates the all-inclusive and welcoming nature of your kingdom. Help me today to be aware of your prompting to demonstrate your love by showing hospitality to those who don’t yet know you. Amen.
