Perseverance in the midst of trials

SCRIPTURE

v.4 Among God’s churches we boast about your perseverance and faith in all the persecutions and trials you are enduring.

OBSERVATION

Paul is delighted that, even with the pressures these new Thessalonian Christians were under, their faith is growing and their love for one another is increasing (verse 3). In their case they are suffering because of their faith, but ultimately God is just and he will count them ‘worthy of the kingdom of God.’ In his first letter to them Paul had prayed that their mutual love would flourish. It’s a reason for great praise that the prayer had been answered.

APPLICATION

It may seem counter-intuitive that faith might grow when the going gets tough for us, but that is often what happens. Often this is because of the trials we are facing and not in spite of them. Until those life trials hit us we never know how we will react in terms of our faith in God. If, when facing a time of trial, we find faith a challenge or even beyond our grasp, we can be sure that God will never stop loving us and that the loving, prayerful support of other Christians will be there for us. We are to give thanks to God for the love that we experience.

PRAYER

May the Lord count us worthy of his calling. By his power may he fulfil every good purpose of ours and every act prompted by our faith, so that the Lord Jesus may be glorified in us and we in him. (From verses 11 and 12).
