Eat a book?
v.10 “I took the little scroll from the angel’s hand and ate it. It tasted as sweet as honey in my mouth, but when I had eaten it, my stomach turned sour.”
It would seem a bizarre command of God to John to take a scroll and eat it but that is exactly what happens. He takes it and consumes it and just as predicted, it tastes as sweet as honey in his mouth but when it reaches his stomach it becomes sour. Of course, it’s not a real paper scroll that John eats: the scroll is a way of describing God’s word.
John is commissioned by God to speak out his word to everyone. As Christians, God’s word is sweet in our mouth: a delight and a joy to read. We are also commissioned, like John, to proclaim the good news but it can be a hard and bitter experience to speak of sin and judgment to others.
Father, help me eagerly to devour your word each day and listen to your voice. By your Holy Spirit, give me courage to tell others of your plan of salvation. Amen.
