Justice & mercy
v.5 …for her sins are piled up to heaven, and God has remembered her crimes.
The passage appears to be speaking of the fall of a very powerful and wealthy city. Our verse reminds us that God had not forgotten the crimes of that city. He had seen everything that had been done and in response he has poured out his judgment on the city.
Some victims of crime never receive earthly justice. Sometimes it seems that some people are able to do whatever they like and get away with it. Here we see that this is not the case because God sees everyone’s deeds, whether good or bad. He will ultimately be their judge.
Dear God, sometimes I find it difficult to accept it when I see people getting away with the wrong things they do. Please help me to take comfort in the knowledge that you see and that you will judge. Please help me to be willing to forgive when people sin against me as I remember too that I am guilty of wrong. Please forgive me, Lord, of my sin. Amen.
