Cheryl Dwyer – 9th February 2014

With only a week to go until I go on Maternity Leave it is nice to be able to have this opportunity to share with you some of the highs of working with the children and families of our church family over the past four and a half years.

It has been a joy and honour to serve in this way every single day, but there are certain moments and events that stand out. Detonate is always a personal high. The fun that is to be had during that week up at the Russell School is enormous.  But more than that, seeing the children grow with God day by day is such an encouragement. This year looking at the Ten Commandments was really powerful.

In 2011 the then Interns (Fiona, Sam & Jon) and I ran the very first Illuminate Time Out.  We took 20 Year 4 & 5 children down to Latimer over night and spent time together having fun, but also looking at God’s Word and worshipping together. Every now and again we hit on moments when God is very obviously at work and during those two days I could see God at work in the lives of the kids.  It was brilliant to share that time together.

Another highlight has been the success of Lighthouse.  During the Autumn of 2011 I felt like God was calling me to set up a new group to reach children in School Years 1-3 who go to Christ Church School, but whom we don’t regularly see at church. From that Lighthouse was born and God has really grown that group.  We have a lot of fun and make a lot of noise, but the kids are also eager to find out more about God and to think about faith for themselves.

As I step back from the Children’s Ministry for a year, please can I encourage you to hold this ministry in your hearts. Please pray for the volunteers and Interns as they take over the day to day running of groups. Please continue to pray for the children that God would meet with them and use them in powerful ways. And maybe you could even consider joining all that we have going on.

Our children need role models of faith to teach them and to guide them. It can seem like a daunting task that takes too much time or too much energy.  But the things that you get to see God doing in these young lives is so encouraging and the impact for the Kingdom that it has is enormous. Chat to one of our current leaders about opportunities for you to come and see all that we get up to.

I’d also like to say an enormous thank you to all the children’s leaders I’ve worked with over the years. The way that you have faithfully served and used your time and talents for the next generation is such an inspiration to me.  I can’t thank you enough for the support you have shown to me and all you have given to the glory of God.

With every blessing
