These sentences have actually appeared in church bulletins or were announced at church services:
Pot-luck supper Sunday at 5pm – prayer and medication to follow.
The ladies of the Church have cast off clothing of every kind. They may be seen in the basement on Friday afternoon
The sermon this morning: ‘Jesus Walks on the Water. ‘The sermon tonight: ‘Searching for Jesus.’
We really hope that our noticesheet provides entertainment at times, but not perhaps for the reasons you will have laughed at these howlers!
The fact is that week by week this little booklet is full of news and information . Time and again visitors to Christ Church, on a Sunday or during the week, pick up a copy and marvel at how much is going on here and what a vibrant and welcoming place it is. Yet often the people that come week after week say that they weren’t told about something and feel frustrated at a lack of communication.
Generally if you read the noticesheet or check our website (www.cccw.org.uk) or watch the screen before and after a service, you’ll see information that will help you keep up with what’s going on here. And this is a key factor in feeling involved and part of the church family here.
This week I received an email from a family who will be moving away. They desperately wanted to know if we knew of a church ‘just like Christ Church’ where they will make their new home. How wonderful that this family have found community here that they want to find again elsewhere.
You see, what we have here at Christ Church is something really precious. Yes, there are sure to be people we struggle with, situations that aren’t quite as we’d like, songs that we don’t know, etc. etc. But God has blessed us with so much – a loving church that is determined to reach out into our wider community .
Hebrews 10 v24-25 says: “And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another – and all the more as you see the Day approaching.”
So please can I encourage you to take the noticesheet home each week, take the time to find out what’s going on, pray for the people and events that are mentioned and join in with as much as you can.
