This is a funny time of year, isn’t it? The whirl of Christmas celebrations is over, the days are still so short and at the moment the weather is hardly invigorating! I find it an easy time to become a bit low and whingey.
So how wonderful that God has pointed me to Philippians 3 where Paul, a man of seemingly endless wisdom and energy says: “… I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me. Brothers, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: forgetting what is behind and straining towards what is ahead, I press on towards the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenwards in Christ Jesus.”
No sitting on his laurels or feeling sorry for himself for Paul! It’s all too easy to be looking back and focusing on what God has done, and miss what he’s doing now. Don’t get me wrong. It’s wonderful to share testimonies of God’s work in our lives with others (Bella’s story further on in this noticesheet of answered prayer is amazing!), and this is a hugely important part of our responsibility for each other—to encourage and build our faith. But the purpose of this sharing is to equip and strengthen us for what’s happening and what lies ahead, not to keep us stuck where we are. The call is to press on, to move, not to remain. And the wonderful thing is that the future is more adventures with God!
We’re now on the second of three weeks considering how we serve God in this church community and beyond. What is God calling us into? What adventure does he have for you and for me? My prayer is that we all hear his call, that we’re not so busy thinking what’s just been that we miss what’s in the present and the future.
